got it worked out!
sudo system-config-printer
Find printer on host. Server → settings Check 'Publish...' and 'Allow...' on client:
sudo system-config-printer Server → settings → Show printers shared by other systems
I just thought of what the problem might be.... could it be that the ubuntu isn't allowing a connection from the laptop? no. 'ufw status' says the firewall is inactive so that isn't the problem.
