the deal is that my brother's computer doesn't have wireless so I need to hardwire it to the printer. The cable needs to go across the room (15 ft)- into a wall mount- out of the house- under the house (50 ft)- into the house- out of a wall mount- to his computer (10 ft). WOW. That is longer than I thought. that's around 75 feet long in total. hmmmmm.... I have an empty phone line (cat 3) there already could I use that?
1 - maybe, depends upon the printer.
2 - do you mean a computer into the printer, not a printer? Then it is possible to make a cat5 cable into a USB cable, but you have to change the connectors on the end to be USB - probably not worth the effort. If the printer has cat5 (what, RJ45?) jacks then just connect it to your network, again assuming the printer can do both. (Mine can - probably can do all 3 but I have wireless turned off on it so use usb and network)
I've taken the liberty of adding 1 and 2 below.

Subject: usb cord
(1) I now run my printer wirelessly. can I also hard wire a computer into the
printer? I think so but I want to make sure.(2) If you can hard wire a printer (I think you mean computer, as I said above)
into the printer as well can cat5 be used to make a usb cord?
