For what it's worth, I'm running the
13.10 kernel in puppy slacko 5.6 on a Dell Precision 670 with one
hyper-threaded CPU and it has virtually "cured" the laggy ills of
ubuntu and mint for me. If I succeed in compiling original vi,
I probably won't go back to the popular distros. The speed is
addicting. Everything works as advertised by Barry Kauler et
al. The learning curve is reasonable and the system apps have
friendly annotations.

I'll backup the current install then

You
might try installing the net yet released kubuntu 13.10 on it.
It's got the 3.11 kernel in it that might have fixed whatever is
causing the lockups.
I've been running it on a Lenovo T60 for a few weeks with no
problems at all.

I've spent the last week going through

locks up.
I recall several months ago that this beast did not lock up
when I tried
Slackware. I'm figuring something happens while Kubuntu is
booting up
that doesn't happen when Slackware boots up. Does anyone know
what that
might be?
I just bought a Dell inspiron 350 yesterday. I'm thinking of
reinfecting this thing with windows and using it only when I
need the
extra processor power. However I really don't want to do
that. I will
be ever so thankful if anyone has an answer. Thanks.
