/tmp

Here comes a stupid question (don't laugh).

How temporary is /tmp? I've downloaded Firefox twice (both times into /tmp)
to play around with it and both times (next day) when I went back it was
gone. Is there something running (debian) that gets rid of anything in /tmp
or am I just loosing it?
