making sound files under Linux

\_ earn it 24/7 with a pager on), I have a tape recording
\_ I would like to turn into a WAV or MP3 file on my
\_ PC. I have been goign through the sound-related
\_ HOWTOs and mini-HOWTOs and was looking for some
\_ advice from anyone reading on here - especially if
\_ any of you do this (or have done this in the past).
