su problem

I can't seem to sucessfully su in as regular user..

I can login sucessfully as root.. (eliminating the fact that I've forgotten
my passwd)

tho as a regular user, I am able to issue the su command, yet when I enter
the right passwd, it takes half a second, then tells me that I have the
incorrect passwd..

any ideas?

a bad permission?
