hard drive help

well...i just installed slackware 8 and im having problems with my hard
drive. whenever my computer accesses the hardrive it slows performance
significatly...causing the audio and graphics to slow down extremely:(
i've compiled and installed kernel 2.4.5 but with no luck. any advice
would be appreciated.
