.NET for Linux?

Greetings,

Last night a friend, a software giant who work in the
world of .NET, told me he heard there is an effort to
develop the .NET framework or a clone, for Linux, a
project that has been going on, as he understands it,
for about a year.

Has anyone heard about this?
