links to /dev

Hey all,
I can't get a dvd player to work on a RH 9 box. I've installed Mplayer
the same way as I always have and its working just no DVD support.
(though it plays VCD fine). I'm thinking that /dev/dvd is pointing to
the work place (or there isn't any link at all). /dev/cdrom seems to be
pointing in the correct place. What command will tell me what /dev/cdrom
is pointing to? and should I be able to just ln -s /dev/dvd to wherever
/dev/cdrom is?
