More stuff I'd like to know -- now, about the Kernel I'm running.

I've currently got Debian Woody with 2.2.20.

A major annoyance is that when LILO sets the video mode to show
60 lines, the boot process yanks me back to 25 lines or so,
apparently so I can watch Tux enjoying a cool one during the
boot process. I'd *really* like my 60 lines. (I'd also like
132 wide, but I think this monitor will only allow me 80. Oh well.)

Some browsing gave me the impression that a later kernel might
give me a way around this.

While installing the CPAN.pm Perl package manager, I saw a
number of references go by to things it was not installing
because of the kernel version. And I think Bastille mentioned
some security behaviors that might be better with a newer
kernel too.

So:

1. With a basic "stable" installation, what is the newest solid
kernel that I would want to bring in? What is it likely to
break, if anything?

2. ... and ... what incantation will install this for me?

3. ... and ... what should I do afterward to ensure that the
rest of the Woody installation is adjusted (if necessary)
to this new version?

Merci en avance,

Vic
