Actually, it does. To answer the next logical questions, I'm running
kernel 2.6, so I don't need to do the ide-scsi stuff, and version
"Cdrecord-Clone 2.01a27" of cdrecord on Gentoo.

Okay, ide-scsi is loaded. But do you see something like "hdc=ide-scsi"
in /proc/cmdline? Do you access the drive when reading as hdc or
sda/sg0/scd0/something-else-along-these-lines?
