Adding support for a specific USB storage device?

I bought a 256Mb USB storage gizmo (Memorex) as an early Father's Day
present (for myself) but, when inserted into my Linux machines,
/var/log/messages says:

usb.c: USB device 2 (vend/prod 0xa16/0x9903) is not claimed by any active
driver.

     Subsequent messages appear hopeful but, when I attempt a mount, it hangs 
for a while before reporting I/O errors. (I have other USB storage devices, 
all considerably smaller, that work Ok.)
     Anyone know what's involved in adding support for a particular device? 
I'm at a loss where to begin.
     Suggestions will be appreciated.
