dist-upgrade on production system

I have a production use Debian server that I am having some problems
with, it is passing more spam than usual and I am not sure if dcc and
vipuls razor and working properly. Would apt-get dist-upgrade be a good
idea to bring everythiing up to spec or would doing that on a
produciton system not be a good idea?

How else can I confirm that vipuls razor and dcc are functioning?
