Credit card processing?

I am thinking of setting up a small online shop, and I want to be able
to automaticly charge credit cards, I know I would need a vendor account
with someone to do this, however I want to be able to write a script to
take care of doing the actual processing. How would this be done? I
found redhats old ccvs, though I understand its no longer
supported/useable etc? I also found montera,
http://www.mainstreetsoftworks.com . Any webdesign guru's out there know
of the best way this would be done?
