So, I need to remount the file system at /var with the user_xattr
option. /var contains Samba shares, internal web sites, and other
priceless data. Oh, and LVM is involved here.
Color me skeptical.

Alan, my man.
I'm having trouble following exactly what you're doing. Can you please
post pvdisplay, lvdisplay and vgdisplay? <just kidding>
user_xattr Enables Extended User Attributes.
Additionally, you need to have extended attribute support enabled in the
kernel configuration (CONFIG_EXT3_FS_XATTR). See the
attr(5) manual page to learn more about extended attributes
Remounting /var might find some many other things now unhappy. Logs
that lose the file source (httpd/Tomcat/Jboss) generally are
problematic; a remount should not clear the file handles or low level
iodes, but just in case, you might want to schedule an interruption
before continuing. NO DOWNTIME is a happier human employment state,
than to appear to be working, however, to whomever?
