I'm guessing it's a "white box" server, since most vendors have pretty
decent spec sheets.

I don't know of a completely magical memory display tool, but I have
used si (System Information Viewer) to get some information about remote
machines out. Once I know the chipset and Processor, figuring out the
memory type is potentially possible.

As a complete worst case, I have bought 2 sets of memory upgrades and
just used the one that fits.

I know some kernels are compiled with a 1GB RAM limit. Almost all are
compiled with a 4GB limit, barring Redhat ES.
